Some of the clearest thoughts come to us in the middle of the night.
Last night my wife slept with the window cracked open. The fresh, crisp, cool air was what she needed to get through the night. I enjoy the crispness of autumn air, but from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. it's more of a winter chill that blows through the cracked window. Needless to say I woke up 4 or 5 times throughout the night, each time with the same thoughts filling my mind.
For months now I have been struggling to find a way to put into action a desire close to my heart. Having worked with troubled youth & their families for 4+ years now in a very involved, very intense setting, my eyes have been opened to the vastness of individuals & their families struggling with depression. My mind turned to research more on the subject & found that more than any 1 reason, including cancer & chronic illness, the #1 reason for geriatric suicide, or attempt is depression. That's an odd thing to write about, you may be thinking, but here is why.
I fully believe that if the elderly in our communities are given the opportunity to connect with other individuals, young or old, big or small and feel wanted by those around them we can significantly improve the tragic story that is elderly people taking their own lives because they feel depressed. Now depression can look like 100 different things and come to someone in 1000 different ways, but the reality is we can help today.
This blog is to join with the people around the world who want to make a difference in the lives of those suffering from depression. This ever so painful state of being is difficult to describe as I have personally witnessed the effects in the live of my own family.
Let me know if there are others out their wanting & willing to make a change.
